Itsumo Misora Manga

Year: 1987 - 1989

Volumes: 5 regular volumes

Published By: Shokagakukan / Shonen Sunday

Licensed (in English): No.

Scanlator(s): Adachi Universe (Vol 1-12)

Category: Mixed Sports, Drama, Comedy

Summary:
Misora Sakajou is the daughter of Kentaro Sakajo, supposedly a great actor - or he would have been, if he hadn't died after his first cameo appearance in a film. In the meanwhile, Misora and her two friends enter Asamidai Middle School, where they meet another trio of friends from the past. All six of them had been involved in a fiery accident at a temple in the past, but by saving the temple's relic, the patron spirit of that temple had granted them special powers, to be awakened on their 13th birthdays. As the six, all gifted athletes, join the sports rental club in order to boost the various sports teams when necessary, they also grow older and one by one come into their powers. In the meantime, various forces in the movie industry start to converge... and a young girl, unaware of her acting talents, may end up as the first Japanese actress ever to win an Oscar.

Review:
Itsumo Misora is a fairly short story, comprising only 5 volumes, of which about half has been scanlated, so it's a little difficult to tell which way Adachi is heading with this manga. While the characters are likable enough, the triple plot hooks of supernatural powers, middle-school mixed sports, and an undiscovered acting talent have yet to converge properly. It may be difficult to sustain all three, but in the meantime, Itsumo Misora is still an enjoyable read.

Slow Step Manga

Slow Step Manga

Year: 1986-1991

Volumes: 7 regular volumes; 4 bunko volumes

Published By: Shokagakukan / Flower Comics

Licensed (in English): No.

Scanlator(s): Adachi's Universe (Vol. 1-3)

Category: Romance, Comedy, Softball, Boxing

Summary:
Minatsu Nakazato encounters a strange boy in the apartment lifts, who immediately says that he likes her, but then changes his mind. Later, she finds out that he is Naoto Kadomatsu, a champion boxer from Jousei High School, who lives a few floors below her. In the meantime, Minatsu's close friend Shuu Akiba has decided to pursue her romantically, and even joins the boxing club in their own high school because of it. Minatsu herself is part of the softball team, led by single-father coach Kango Yamakazura, who also likes her. When Minatsu disguises herself as a girl named Maria Sudou in order to avoid gangsters, Naoto sees her and falls in love with "Maria". Thus, Minatsu is now caught in a quadrangle of love, with Shuu and Yamakazura pursuing her, and Naoto pursuing "Maria". As all these different personalities collide and change, Minatsu starts to grow up and take slow steps in understanding what it means to love.

Review:
Slow Step is a rather interesting manga, in that it is heavily character-focused, and doesn't seem to have much of a plot. Definitely catering more to the shoujo than the shonen crowd, it is a slow and gentle portrayal of a young girl going through her daily life, and the romances around her. As only three volumes have been scanlated so far, there isn't enough information for a full review yet, but it looks promising enough.
